The Dish of the Day

After overnighting in Glen Innes and Dubbo, where I picked up my co-traveller Pauline (aka PD), we are spending the night at West Wyalong. It was a late departure from Dubbo this morning, yet there was still plenty of time to call into the Parkes Radio Telescope - the Dish - the receiver of more than 2 hours of the moon landing.

The turnoff to the Dish is 20k north of Parkes on the Newell Highway and it only takes a couple of minutes to drive up to the car park. You can view the Dish and look at most of the small exhibits in the visitor centre for free. You can also get good coffee and scones in the Dish Cafe.

PD and I let loose our inner child and tested out the whispering parabolic disks located on the car park side of the visitor entrance. PD whispered into one disk and I could clearly hear every word in the other dish located more than 50m away. Very cool.

Apostle birds (because you always find them in groups of 12):
