Cradle Mountain to Strahan

We had a visitor to a campsite this morning:

After a lazy morning we drove to Strahan via Zeehan. The roads were good, if a bit winding and mainly downhill. The motorhome had no trouble, but a caravan owner we met said they could feel the weight of their van pushing and making it heavy going for their brakes.

There are only a couple of small villages on the road and nearly everything was closed on a Sunday. We enjoyed the flowering native shrubs and the changes of vegetation along the route.

We made a small detour to Zeehan, a town which was prosperous in the past by the looks of the well maintained old buildings. It was pretty sleepy today.

There is an unnamed lookout on the Zeehan to Strahan road that looks over a wide expanse of beach and the Henty Dunes. There was an unusual bank of cloud out to sea:

If you feel energetic, the Henty sand dunes are about 11k north of Strahan on the road from Zeehan. PD and I drove in, looked at the height of the dune we would have to climb to get views and chickened out.

We arrived in Strahan and paid for our river cruise tomorrow. Hopefully we will have much more to report on.

PD had time for a stroll to West Strahan Beach on the tannin stained waters of Macquarie Harbour:
